1  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Manga Discussion / Re: Kazuki and his mother on: February 20, 2012, 07:43:40 pm
I'll check tonight, but I'm pretty sure she said "You must go" and I forgot to mention the mistake the first time. It's easy to confuse must/must not in Japanese. Sorry!  Wink
2  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Manga Discussion / Re: What is the Raitei? on: February 20, 2012, 07:18:11 pm
For clarification: Raitei = Lightning Lord (that is the literal meaning of the word)

I didn't start reading this manga till I started translating it at vol 29, so you'll have to excuse me if I render the names differently than what you're used to seeing  Grin
3  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Manga Discussion / Re: GB 1st, 2nd, 3rd futures?? on: July 31, 2011, 06:30:39 pm
It's not totally clear at this point in the story. But the gist of it seems to be:

1st Future: The future the Archiver wants. Essentially a "hard reset" of the world, where everything is remade and everyone is completely under the Archiver's control with no free will.

2nd Future: The future that Masaki and the cursed knights want. The actions of VOLTS were putting humanity on the path to this future - though only Masaki understood it in these terms. This future also seems to have no free will, but the details of that aren't clear. I guess originally, Raitei would be the intended "lord of rebirth" for this future, but when Ginji left the Infinity Fortress Masaki took over that role.

3rd Future: The "free" future with no ruler or "lord of rebirth" or whatever. Masaki and the Archiver both see this future as being completely chaotic and don't think that anyone should want it to come to pass. However, this is the future that MakubeX, Ginji, and the others are working toward.

That site was one of the precursors to this one actually. Kinda, sorta.

But it's far from complete. It's just random bits and pieces of various chapters. A lot of the translations are mine too, and some are pretty screwy since I was just doing random pages out of context without having read the series at all.

6  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Manga Discussion / Re: belt line & babylon city on: November 18, 2010, 09:06:05 am
The entrance to Babylon City is Heaven's Door, which is at the very top of the Beltline. It's that gigantic door that the Voodoo King was sitting next to a little while ago.

For everything else, you'll just have to wait to find out Wink

Hey, couple notes for chapter 1 of volume 34:

1. Ginji's joke line "Don't they say blood is thick as an otter?" I changed it to fit the joke. He really says "Don't they say hemorrhoids hurt worse than athlete's foot?" It's a silly pun. The lines sound similar in Japanese:

Chi wa mizu yori mo koi (Blood is thicker than water)

Ji wa mizu-mushi yori mo itai (Hemorrhoids hurt worse than athlete's foot)

2. When Akabane shows up the background text is the song Kagome Kagome (I kinda fucked up the translation - got lazy QQ). It's sorta like the Japanese version of ring around the rosy, but there's kid who sits in the middle of the ring with a blindfold on, and he has to guess which kid is standing behind him when the song ends. Also, like ring around the rosy, it sounds kinda creepy out of context like this.

Wooooooo. Peace!

Congrats. You're already more coherent than most native English speakers on the Internet!  Cool

And welcome
9  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Manga Discussion / Re: Getbackers' New Side Story.. on: October 02, 2010, 01:46:09 pm
I might translate this eventually if I'm feeling extremely un-lazy. But right now I'd rather concentrate on banging out actual new chapters
10  The Honky Tonk Lounge / General Manga Discussion / Re: Worst moments in manga and anime. on: September 22, 2010, 10:06:58 pm
One thing that agitates me to no end is just how underused Pikkon was in DBZ. He was the man! And he gets one lousy fight with Goku?

It's because he was anime filler. That was a cool fight though.

The most recent bad development I can think of is Katastrophe in Gantz. The intensity better pick up soon, because these giant aliens don't seem all that threatening, and we're just getting chapters of "TAE-CHAAAAN!" over and over.

(on a brighter note, I'm translating the new Gantz chapters, so you should still read them  Cool)
11  The Honky Tonk Lounge / General Anime Discussion / Re: Guess the anime openings! ;P on: September 20, 2010, 03:51:15 pm
Heh. I got 30. I haven't watched a lot of anime since the 90s really. I've never even heard of half these.

At least it gave me Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood when I typed "Full Metal Alchemist 2"  Cheesy I didn't even know there was another one.
12  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Manga Discussion / Re: Latest chapter discussion on: September 17, 2010, 05:15:25 pm
It's been a while, so let's have some more notes!

The Fuuchouin use a bunch of confusing terms that I probably should have researched a little better before this. I'm going to be more consistent with them from now on.

1. Souke (宗家) - This term can refer to the main branch of a group of families/clans, and it can also refer to the head of the main branch family as an individual. So Kazuki's family is the "souke," and Kazuki's dad is also the "souke."  I'm gonna translate the first sense as "Head Family" and the second as "Clan Head."

The Head Family is generally determined by the lineage of the eldest son. This is why Kazuki, being the eldest son of the Head Family, is considered the successor to the Fuuchouin. If you read Naruto, the Hyuuga have the same sort of heirarchy. Hinata is part of the Heady Family like Kazuki, and Neji is part of a branch family like Saizou.

The issue with Yohan in the volume 31 flashback was that they wanted the Kokuchouin to take over as the new Head Family, and for Yohan to become the new Clan Head. But Kazuki's dad wouldn't allow it (because Yohan's a fuckin' psycho and all).

2. Soushu (宗主) - This is the leader of a family/clan/etc. But I think it's a term that's only used between the leaders of the branches themselves and not by lower members. I'm not 100% on it, really. As I understand it, Kazuki's dad and Saizou's dad would both call each other "Soushu", but Saizou's dad calls Kazuki's dad "Soushu-sama" because Kazuki's dad is from the head family. I just translate it as "Lord" for lack of a better English word.

3. Ura / Omote (裏/表) - Roughly, "ura" means "hidden/underside" and "omote" means "public/top side." The Fuuchouin has its "Ura" side (the Ura-Fuuchouin) which stays hidden and does nasty things in the shadows, and everyone else is on the "Omote" side. I don't translate "Ura" since it pops up so much, but "Omote" I translate into "Mainline" because I think it's clearer that way.

3. Ougi (奥義) - Most of the names for the bowstring arts techniques Kazuki and Saizou use are "chuu-den" - "middle grade." The dragon and firebird techniques they used in this chaper were "ougi-den," which I called "master grade." "Ougi" means like "secret teachings," but in this context it implies like a secret super technique that only a real badass can use.

4. In this chapter Kazuki and Saizou use the honorific "-dono" with each other. I translated it as "master" (*gasp* I know! You'll have to deal Cool).

Shit. That was a lot. Hopefully that's it for a while. Heh.

Naw, it's cool, man. The series has been out so long it's kind of amazing that we seem to be the only ones working on it anymore. Vaya con dios  Wink
