1  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Anime Discussion / Re: Did anyone notice this episode on: July 11, 2010, 01:09:44 am
I saw this info some 3 years back in ANN when I was searching for info regarding GB.

"In episode 37, Do Your Best, Natsumi! (Natsumi Ganbaru!), the Sexy Demon Gang (Big Butt Bandits) from Groove Adventure Rave (Rave Master) made a cameo appearance as jewel thieves."
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1840&page=22

So I knew those thieves were related to some Anime but forgot which Anime was it. Coincidentally, I just finished watched Rave last week, and these guys show up. I went and checked ANN again to see if this was the Anime they were talking about, and it was indeed Rave Master.  Grin

They show up in 3 episodes in Rave. The first 2 were a bit boring, but the last episode.. lololol!!

7  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Manga Discussion / Getbackers' New Side Story.. on: June 03, 2010, 04:07:19 pm
I saw this news more than a year back on ANN. Glad I remembered it now-

GetBackers Manga Returns in One-Shot Side Story

This year's second issue of Kodansha's Magazine Special has announced on Tuesday that a one-shot GetBackers manga side story will appear in the next issue on February 20. Writer Yuya Aoki and artist Rando Ayamine serialized the original GetBackers supernatural action manga in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from 1999 to 2007. In the story, two young men use their special powers to run a freelance agency to recover any person or item with an "(almost) 100% success rate." 18 million copies of the 39 compiled volumes were eventually published, and the manga spawned a popular television anime series and seven Konami games.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-01-21/getbackers-manga-returns-in-one-shot-side-story

So there are 39 volumes + This Side Story. I just thought I should let you guys know that such an additional story exists. If you guys can get hold of this and scanlate it as well, it would be nice. Smiley

------------

This shouldn't be here but if anyone has links to these following 3 Games then please direct me to it.
GetBackers Dakkanya: Ubawareta MugenshiroI(for PS2)
Getto Bakkazu(for Game Boy)
GetBackers Dakkanya(for PlayStation/PS1)

I already have links to the other 4 games. Only these 3 are hard to find.

For me it’s the opposite direction of what you have described. I can think of tons of shows in which the Japanese seiyuu were screaming like mad, don’t sound the least cute and have huge changes in their tones whether they are talking casually or murderous, while the English dub actors just couldn't sound anymore bored.
Generally I find the Seiyuu's don't shout a lot, atleast the Anime I've seen, including Getbackers. Even if they do, they shout like they are holding their voice back. And yeah, there are English dubs who try to maintaining their pitch levels constant but inturn sound emotionless. They are also not very reactive.. like they don't sound hurt when injured, in Jap. They go down with pin drop silence or just a slight whimper.

Quote
Oh, and Kenshin was based on a real historical figure, an assassin who had so feminine looks that he disguised himself as a geisha to avoid being tracked by pursuers. Maybe the anime producers gave him a female seiyuu to stay true to that one fact, to make him passable as a woman? XD And Watsuki Nobuhiro himself, creator of Rurouni Kenshin, has said that he wanted Kenshin to have a soft-sounding, androgynous voice. In fact, when the first RuroKen drama CD came out (that had a different seiyuu cast from anime), Kenshin had a female seiyuu there too, and while Watsuki admitted that he liked her voice, he still thought it was a bit too rough-sounding than he had imagined for Kenshin. Or something along those lines, I don't remember the EXACT words. Don't be nitpicky.
Well.. even if he disguised himself, I doubt he sounded 100% feminine like Kenshin. Besides east asians generally have less body mass and least non-square faces which makes it easier to disguise. And it's not just Kenshin, but Goku as well.
The creators basically wanted a female voice for Kenshin, probably for Kawaii reasons.

Quote
I know that they are older in the anime than in the manga. That’s why I’m wondering why they sound like they are in their 40s?
Nah.. I'm in my 20's and I sound more or less like them, Lovux. And there isn't much of a difference between 20s and 40s when compared to a voice change from 15 and 20 in males. There's a drastic change in those years after puberty. Ginji and Jackal's voices are too soft in that regard, They sound too young than they actually are in Jap. And besides, the Animax Audio has a lower pitch in general because of low quality/low sampling rate.

Quote
I’m aware of that too. I can hear it happen in the sub as well. Listen to Akabane’s original seiyuu and you’ll hear the difference when he’s talking casually or or feeling thrilled. However, what grinds my ears in the Animax dub (and the ADV too, for that matter) is that they sound like they are straining their voices in order to sound like their assigned characters. They aren’t using their natural voice tones. Which is why, whenever they raise their voices, it cracks horribly and becomes painfully obvious that the voice they use for the character is just fake.
Not sure about ADV but in Animax, those are indeed natural tones. They occasionally speak for the channel in the earlier years. The difference between them and the Seiyuu's, atleast in GB is that, they go all out like they are normally acting. They don't hold back.

Quote
Oh, I ADORE Jackal’s Japanese voice. They couldn’t have gotten a better seiyuu for him, IMO. He sounds sugary polite and soft… and simultaneously so cold-blooded, heartless and intimidating in a way that you don’t know what he’s thinking, and that if you make even ONE wrong move, you’re dead. If I was talking to someone who sounded like Jackal does in the sub, I’d be a hair away from fainting in fear. For srs.

Not gonna argue with the gay comment though. XD
Dunno.. but I can only see him for only a sugary, polite & soft guy in the subs. When he attempts to sound serious or when he attempts to shout, it sounds like he is trying too hard not to break the barrier and lose his tone.

Quote
Yeah, I saw just the other day an episode in which Shido showed up, and I was pulling my hair off my head when I heard “Sido”. Well, the hair that was left after pulling off nearly everything I had on my head after hearing Kazuki speak... I’m not even gonna rant.
hehe.. I know how you feel. Several fans have said the same thing. But for me male voices FTW in Shounen Anime. Wink I don't mind if they use soft voices in Shoujo or other magical girl anime though. But even before the voices, dialogues take the center stage. Dialogues are the key.. the voices are just a medium.

Quote
the ADV had the exact same problem (everybody sounding exactly the same). And that dub, I watched high quality videos of. Hmm….
hmm.. Not sure why you find them similar. They sound different for me.

Quote
The only thing I reacted to was how Ginji said to Kaoru in the sub and ADV versions that he’ll never forget her feelings for him, while the Animax dub has it that it's the feelings they had for each other that he’ll remember. This makes it sound like they actually had a mutual fling, which definitely is an error. And a rather bad one at that.
Yeah, it's an error if you look at it that way.. but it doesn't have to be mutual feeling. Maybe Ginji just had a thing for kaoru and not love. The Anime didn't really touch that aspect much. The whole arc was made-up anyway. Anyway, it enhances the moment when Ginji remembers it, but is no longer the person he used to be. Maybe one of the reason why that fight was my absolute fav. Grin I still get goose bumps after watching that fight atleast 25 times. It captures Ban's and Ginji's personality perfectly. How cocky Ban deals with his opponents, and how soft hearted Ginji deals with his. Sub or Dub, it was a masterpiece. The way Ban says his lines and his dialogues increases the superb-ness of the moment in the Animax Dub. You can notice Ginji's voice in the sub was too young & soft there when compared to the 2 dubs.

Yep, we’re all entitled our own opinions! And I don’t mind discussing with people who disagree with me and hearing them out, I think it's interesting. ;P
Exactly. Smiley

Thanks Lovux. cool.. you saw it while it was on youtube. Smiley And I remember now... I labeled it like that for some time.. good memory Lovux! Wink But that account got suspended after ADV repeatedly claimed rights to that video.

a good LOL moment when Akabane wielded his lightsaber.... XD XD XD
hehe..yeah. Also by comments in youtube, People liked the way I brought out jackal and gave Shido the role of Chewy.  Grin

I found the other video on some website meant for professional AMV guys to show off their stuff. I instantly fell in love with the GB matrix video when I saw it.

I made this long ago during spare time using Windows Movie maker of all softwares. There was little similarity so I used some imagination. I hope it's entertaining- http://rapidshare.com/files/383491210/u2_chunk_1.wmv.html

This one is a professional one made my someone for an AMV/parody contest I think. He used Adobe premier pro. And also high quality DVD clips. His objective was to take clips which are similar between the Getbackers Episodes and the original trailer. There is a video which compares them both but I couldn't find it- http://rapidshare.com/files/383512756/parody.mp4.html
12  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Anime Discussion / Re: The GB Q & A Corner.. & FAQ on: May 04, 2010, 12:01:58 pm
That is the ADV dub Lin. Not sure whether you'll like it or not, but like you said you should give it a chance. In the link below there is a video which compares all 3. Check it out if you're interested. Smiley

--

I didn't find the Jackal comparison video Lovux, but I did find this-

This is from my fav fight, Ginji vs Kaoru and also Ban vs the Wind kid, which I made years ago. All 3- Japanese with English subs, ADV and Animax are compared. Ginji vs kaoru battle is my fav that's why I made this. But apart from that you can also compare Ban. The differences are amazing. You can make out who's the cocky and Bad-ass Ban among the 3, and which of these 3 Ban's character relates with the Manga. This reminds me of Ban vs Priest Saicho's fight for some reason.
The Animax video, as I pointed out earlier is no where near the DVD quality of the other 2, because it isn't from a DVD. You can notice the low quality/low pitch Audio here when you compare it along side them. Not just the Audio but also the Video.

Here you go- http://rapidshare.com/files/383494742/adv_all.wmv.html
13  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Anime Discussion / Re: The GB Q & A Corner.. & FAQ on: May 04, 2010, 05:52:08 am
Thanks Harow. Smiley
Yeah, the manga as it reaches later chapters would provide a better explanation. I'll have to update this FAQ when that happens. But info given here after the Anime and Manga diverges would most probably remain the same.
14  The Honky Tonk Lounge / Getbackers Anime Discussion / Re: The GB Q & A Corner.. & FAQ on: May 04, 2010, 05:11:07 am
Thanks so much Lovux. Smiley I'm extremely pleased people are finding it useful.

Quote
And yet tons of doujin-kas and fanartists insist on drawing Ginji as some short, annoying, whimpy, oh-so-rapeable little uke boy.... Argh. I fucking hate that.
hehe.. yeah. Ban's spiky hair creates the illusion that he is taller, but when viewed with his hair down, it's obvious who's taller.

Quote
First of all, the voices were just. Too. Damn. Deep. You say that they sound badass. I think they sound like old men twice as old as the supposed ages of the characters.
and whenever they raise their voices, it just sounds awkward
Oh no.. not at all, didn't take it personally. Infact, I expect people to say this. I totally understand you. Infact, I've gone through that phase. As most of english speakers here, I was first introduced to dubs. When I first saw the subs I did find it to be smooth and pleasing to hear. It felt like a new experience from the dubs. Infact when I noticed most anime fans prefer the subs over the dubs, even I got pulled into it. When I started to dwell deep into it only then I realized something. There were little or no variations in harmonics and decible levels at all.. hence there wasn't much of a difference whether they sound murderous or talking casually or angry. It felt like the Japanese VAs are trying hard not to break the barrier. Ofcourse their emotions are conveyed, but it is all within the barrier of not sounding too harsh. This is a far cry from say, some hollywood action heros. Anyway.. that's when I read about the Kawaii culture in Japan. With Anime and Manga leading this phenomenon, it's obvious why the Seiyuu don't breach the barrier and thus sound harsh and uncute. Infact, the voice actress of Kenshin.. that was the extreme version of this. Many people find subs to be nice over the dubs in Kenshin, but I find it totally wrong. Kenshin is in his mid or late 20's. When I first watched it, when the Actress spoke, I was searching who was the woman character who's speaking. When I realized it was kenshin, I missed a heart beat. But people still say Kenshin's Jap voice is the best. Ofcourse I respect that since it is part of the Kawaii Culture.

The VA for the Animax dub were in their early-mid 20's when they dubbed it. Ban and Ginji unlike the Manga where they are 18 years old, they are 21 in the Anime. So the voices does match. They are not as low pitched as say bad-ass actors like Bruce or Gene Hackman, but just right to fit in the role of GB anime characters. Jackal is older than Ban and Ginji and is most probably in his late 20's or early 30's.

When people raise their voices or get emotional, their pitch and decibel levels does change. Ofcourse it isn't very Kawaii, but it's the normal realistic way. People have to watch it without looking through the prism of Kawaii-ness to appreciate it. Or else it will hurt the ears.

Quote
I mean seriously, what happened to Ginji's innocent goofyness? And why's Ban not sneaky like a serpent? Where's Akabane's bloodthirst? And why do they sound so SIMILAR?
Well actually Ginji does sound goofy and innocent in the dub but not as much as in the sub. In the subs, in my opinion, he sounds like a 15 year old, so naturally he's more innocent sounding there. Ban is sly, you need to watch a few more episodes there. And what's more, he's cool & Bad-ass. He even uses swear words sometimes and acts like a punk like in the manga, unlike the dignified Ban we know in the subs. Nobutoshi Canna's voice fits for Ban in the subs. Jackal's voice, well, I find it too soft in the subs. This reminds me, I've read youtube comments where casual fans have concluded that he was gay based on the voice and the way he speaks. Jackal's voice is deep for his age and he maintains his coolness, which I find nice in the Animax one. I'll get you a Jackal video which I made long back.. you'd find it interesting with regards to his lust for blood. ((This reminds me, I made a very short GB parody sometime back.. totally forgot about it.)) In the ADV dub, I dunno, maybe Americans would appreciate it since Brits are popular villains there.. hehe.. he carries an English accent in the ADV. However the dubs are also not as flawless. There are a couple of dubbing errors. Also, Jackal is voiced by different VA in a few episodes in the Animax one. The ADV dub changed Ban's voice actor after a few episodes. In the ADV, they have changed Ban's name to Bon. In the Animax dub Shido is called Sido. Infinity fortress becomes Limitless fortress in the ADV while it's Maze city in the Animax one.
They have cut down some of the female fan service in the animax dub.. for example.. there is no "like a horse" dialogue, and ofcourse no "Ban-chan".
There are are many more differences.

Dunno why you find it similar. I think it's maybe because the recorded Animax videos have a very low quality & low pitched Audios which mashes up the voices and makes it even deeper/low pitched than it usually is.

Quote
It's stiff
Stiff? No way.. they convey their emotions with usual vigor, which explains their changes in pitch. They are the least stiff of the 3, atleast to me. Smiley

Still like I said, to each his own. People have different tastes afterall. Smiley
