Title: Latest chapter discussion
Post by: Lovux The Great on February 11, 2010, 12:23:27 pm
I figured we needed a thread like this.  Here, we can discuss and/or comment on the latest events in the latest chapters that have been released by our always amazing, heroic scanlation team.

So I guess I'll start things off by giving you MY thoughts on what's been going on lately in the GB manga...

In this arc, I'm glad more light's being shed on the characters' pasts, namely Ban and the Voodoo Children. We all want to know what eaxvtly happened to Ban and made him to the person he is today, just as much as we want to know what it means to be a Voodoo Child and what is waiting for Himiko to come.

As usual, I was blown away by the latest chapter's, bluntly put, general awesomeness. This manga never ceases to amaze me, from how the story moves forward in every single chapter, to how it is aesthetically told; the way Ayamine Rando uses angles and shading and picture composition is awestrucking.
The way Himiko fought her opponent sent chills down my spine. Her speeches and facial expressions were all spot-on. You could feel the coldness in her eyes when she told Ginji not to get in her way, as well as blood thirst when she stepped into the arena. And hey, isn't Himiko a total doll in this arc? She's just too pretty...
And so, Ginji's becoming Raitei again. No, Ginji, honey, don't! Don't borrow your inner sociopath's strength, you have proved that you ARE capable of fighting on your own! Please don't loose yourself!
... But WTF, Paul's eyes?!

Well, I don't know what else to say other than that I'm glad I'm reading this manga, and that I'm eagerly waiting for further development. It only gets better and better!

Yup! This arch really shed a lot of light on Ban's and Himiko's past. I was quite surprised by how everyone in round about way are closely connect to each other! Not mention the growth in all characters are astonishing! Especially the newest chapter! Himiko does kick ass! She didn't even break out in sweat! Her personality was soo twisted! It was like her other mirror half. I thought theat they are supposed be opposite to each other...I guess the different sides are supposed join along with the personality! It seems everyone has another personality! Or huge secrete!

... But WTF, Paul's eyes?!

Remember the person who looked over Ginji when he was a kid named Teshimine Takeru, he has those eyes aswell.

And no I'm not going to spoil you all, just making sure you all remember.

... Damn it, Ban. Your dad is HOT.

*pant pant* So, this was another breath-taking part of the lovely story, and FFFFFFFFF, I've run out of words I can use to praise it.

Apparently, Der Kaiser (who by the way is HOT) and Paul has the same eyes, as does Teshimine, which Vent pointed out in the post above. I can't wait to see the connection between these three guys, I bet it's something super epic and intelligent, fitting the rest of this intricate GB-verse. FFFFFFFF I'm all hyped up now! AAAAHH!! *runs around in circles*

Yeah, and did I mention that Ban's dad is HOT? 'Cause he is. Mmhmm, he is. *heart-shaped eyes*

Yes, he is! ;) BUT he is so EVIL! :o Poor Ban...no wonder why he is bit twisted!

WOW. That was INTENSE.

Seriously, I all but forgot to breath while reading the latest chapter.

BAN-CHAN! OH GOD BAN-CHAN! You're hurt... :'( Anyway, GO! GO TO YOUR GINJI! Save him! Only you can do it! HURRY BEFORE IT'S TO LAAAAATE!

GAAAAHHH I don't think I've been this eagerly anticipating the next chapter of a manga for at least a couple of years. Why does this manga have to be so damn fantastic?

On a less fangirlish note, seeing Paul in front of a computer reminded me of the last arc in the anime with him hacking and stuff and thus provide help to our retrivers and their lovely friends. I guess the writer of the manga took inspiration from there? XD

The last few chapters have been really exciting!!  I had seen them before in raw scans, but of course, one doesn't really know what's going on if it isn't translated.  Being able to understand what is actually happening is amazing -- I just can't tell you all how grateful I am to finally have access to these chapters!   *cheers*  ;D

Using sweet Ginji as part of an evil plan for taking over the Archive is just plain wrong!   >:(  It looks like Ban is going to come to the rescue, though, in spite of being injured.  As if that would keep him away when Ginji needs him!!

I have to say, that the GB manga has the art of the cliffhanger down pat!  Ugh, what a place to leave us hanging...

Yep! I totally agree with there! Poor Ginji! He being used by Ban's father! I told that Ban's father is SUPREME EVIL! Wow, just how evil is he! Using people like that! >:( It was definitely one exciting chapter!  ;D

Hey guys. If anyone's interested in a rough trans of the Genko Backers extra:

The first page is a note from Takashi Oonishi (are these people assistants? I'm not sure). He says he went to Comiket (gigantic annual doujin festival) at the end of last year. It was really cold. There was a...garbage man(?)...and he was...painting(?) the ceiling and it made him nervous (not quite sure about that part :P). Other than that he didn't go out at all during winter break.

Second page is "The Legend of Bonzo Part III." The girl snaps a photo of Bonzo (the dog) showing his sleep face and sends it as a picture-email. "Bonzo sleeps with the whites of his eyes showing and his tongue sticking out. Creepy!"

At the bottom is from someone named Yoshida. His workplace changes and he has to move to Hokkaido. His head is a map of Hokkaido. On the front it says "Dekkaido" (pun with Hokkaido and "dekkai" - huge). In the last panel it says "back" (because he's turned around. heh). He says the light in the entranceway is motion sensitive...motion sensitive. Awesome! Underneath is a note: "Hokkaido's even got electricity now!"

So yeah...Now you know :)

I found this chapter (along with the last one) to be a very helpful explanation of the complicated relationship between Raitai/Ginji and the Infinity Fortress/Archive.  Not that I really understand it all that well even now, but it makes more sense now than it did before!

Yeah! I understand you mean! You understand  some of the connection, but overall it somewhat still confusing. The Getbacker's plotline tend to be like that. Deep and Intricate. Like Caculus C, you understand what the equations are for but you aren't too sure how to use it...I did alright in that class, but still got a C... >:(

Umm... what's the relationship between Raitei/Ginji in Infinity Fortress again?
I'm lost... :(

Oh, basically in this volume it describes  Ginji's power in Ratei mode.

SPOILER
Basically Ginji's ability in Ratei mode allows him to take all electrical energy from the Infinity Fortress, which is suppose to have infinite energy source. (His normal mode cannot absorb that much energy or in such short time.) His ability in Ratei mode to absorb energy in chapter 8 is said to exceed the amount of energy that is generated by Infinite Fortress even though it supposedly infinite. It just means that he is so strong in Ratei mode due to his ability that allows he can manipulate Infinity Fortress' energy. (Ginji power as Ratei = Infinity Fortress electrical = infinite power) He can take energy from it as he within close distance of it with exception when he is angry. When he angry, he take energy at farther distance as seen in beginning of The Eternal Bond arch, dealing with Shido's past.

In this chapter we also learn that Ratei is vulnerable during this time if there isn't sufficient electricity available to support his "need."  The fact that Der Kaiser is staging this whole incident as a means of depleting that electricity and taking over the Archive -- and thuse sacrificing Ratei/Ginji in the process -- really pisses me off!   >:(

Deep and intricate plot lines are confusing, indeed -- but that makes it all the more worthwhile rereading several times, because one always finds something new to understand!

And I really think that it's not going to be possible to fully "get it" until the very end -- I don't think even the Getbackers understand everything yet, either!

Late reply is late.

This chapter had so much content in it, it didn't feel like it was just twenty pages long! It's amazing how the mangaka can put so much story and character development in one chapter without making it seem too crammed or rushed. 95 % of all other shounen mangas have mountains of lessons to learn from Get Backers!

Juubei is AWESOME. His undying devotion and determination was greatly fleshed out in those flashbacks. In more ways than one, he truly is the most honorable character in this series. Good display of Sakura's loyalty too - she is just as much of a samurai as her brother is!
The way he PWNED that Ura-Fuuchouin thug can be summarized by a big fat FUCK YEAH!! He just calmly walked up to that ugly monster, gave him a FINGER POKE OF D00M and then walked back as the winner. If that's not badass then I don't know what is.

I was REALLY surprised at Der Kaiser's statement at the last page; I always figured Kagami to be a joker who freely switches sides (like Akabane) or a pawn working for a greater mastermind, so to have him being the one who actually planned and set everything in motion was, for a lack of better word, WHOAH!!! Didn't see that coming!

As usual, I'm eagerly anticipating the next chapter~

Amen!   :D  Juubei is so impressive it leaves me breathless!  Holding that huge thing off with one finger, and then just turning away with no more thought of it -- that's confidence!  And the fact that everything he does is tied to his loyalty makes it even more awesome!

I may have said this before, but it's worth mentioning again.  I've seen all the raws of the coming chapters (because I couldn't stand not knowing what happens) -- but looking at the pictures doesn't hold a candle to seeing it translated in all its awesomeness!  I really was not getting the full impact of such amazing chapters like this one -- I soooo can't wait for the next one now!   :o

Eh!! You peeked! Well, I understand. It was getting a bit exciting with what happening. "Curiosity killed the cat and satisfaction revived it!" People always forget about the last half of statement...that is it is alright to be curious! Half time I know I shouldn't look/ask and I do anyway!

Yes, I peeked!  I'm actually a person who likes to know how things end -- oddly enough, I can relax and enjoy the in-between parts better if I know how things are going to turn out, even if I don't know all the details.  Somehow it doesn't actually spoil anything for me; rather, it enhances the approach to the ending, if you know what I mean!  I'm much more satisfied if I know, and I think I pay better attention to the rest of it because of it.  I'm just odd like that, lol!    8)

Oh, yeah! I do that too! Books that I read I usually look at the ending before I even begin to read it! The only time I don't look at the ending if I REALLY know about about author/authoress of book. IN fact, I was soo curious at only look at the end of Getbackers so I could see if it ended happy. I can't ignore my urge...but it was worth to see the ending! Now I can relax about ending of this series...

Few notes on chapter 3:

- Slight screw-up by me. Not a huge deal, but on the last page of the chapter Paul doesn't say "lost time" he says "stolen time." Oh well.

- On that note: They usually mention the Infinity Fortress in connection with the "Lost Time" (ushinawareta toki). When Paul talks about the Infinity Fortress appearing during the recession, he's referring to Japan's big recession of the 1990s, which the Japanese sometimes call the "Lost Decade" (ushinawareta juunen). It's a neat parallel.

- I've never heard of an Intelligent Building before. I looked it up and I guess they're a type of office building that became popular in the '80s, especially in Japan. They've got things like automated blinds and heating systems connected to motion detectors and stuff.

Oh really! "Lost time" sounds a lot cooler than "stolen time!" Plus the arc is also called "Lost Time"

Couple notes for chapter 4:

-Natsumi, Rena, and the customer all call Paul "Master." It's an English loan-word for a manager or a bar owner. I change it to "Mr. Wan" because two teenage girls calling old dude "Master" sounds pretty creepy in English ;D

-I also noticed a couple fuckups. Not huge, but I may as well mention them:

::When Paul's leaving, I misread the verb tense. He literally says "Yo, Partner. // I've found you. / Your location."

::Teshimine says that Ban is pretty famous in the "ura no sekai" (裏の世界), the "underworld." I wasn't sure about it at first, and I forgot to change it once I figured it out.

Hee hee...it is fine! I would definitely change that too! It can be soo misinterpreted....from a slave/master relationship to disciple/master. Neither one would be good!

I have really enjoyed the last couple of chapters; I can't quite put my finger on why, except maybe because we are learning more about what makes some key characters tick, and it's not quite what I expected.  This interlude between one story arc and the next is fascinating as we learn more about some of the key people who have up to now been in the background -- Paul, Der Kaiser, and Teshimine-san.  I am really fascinated by what is being revealed about Ban's father, and I am really beginning to wonder what will happen when he and Paul finally meet.

It's so interesting that both Ginji and Ban each have a mysterious parent and to find out more about them they have to go to Babylon City.

I love it that they hire each other to get back an important person they each have lost!  I was afraid for a tiny minute there that Ban would succeed in making Ginji stay behind.  But of course, Ginji wouldn't allow that, lol!  I'm also very relieved that Kazuki is going to let Shido help him; I'm worried about him at the moment, he seems to be acting out of character!

Anyway, these have been a great couple of chapters!  I continue to rejoice that I am able to enjoy them and read them and know that the next one will be coming soon.  What a blessing to have them translated and scanned!!!   :D

Glad you guys appreciate the notes. I'm learning too as I do this, so it also helps gather my thoughts a bit. As for chapter 6:

- I made up the line where Kagami tells Himiko that she is the "presence" to other Himiko's "void." In the Japanese he  just says "You are a tenon." It's a woodworking term:

I don't know how familiar that word is to most people, so I just made it literal. Traditional Japanese architecture is done that way, so maybe they'd be expected to understand.

- I also decided to spell Kagami's given name as "Kyoji" instead of "Kyouji." It looks cleaner to me that way.

- And on that topic, "Kagami Kyoji" is a real Japanese name (in the sense that a real person could be called that), but normally it might be spelled more like this: 加賀美 (Kagami) 恭司 (Kyoji). Instead, the kanji Aoki uses are 鏡 (Kagami - literally "mirror") and 形而 (Kyoji). The Kyoji part doesn't really mean anything in itself, but it's probably alluding to the philosophical principles of 形而下 (keijika - "below form" - i.e., physical/material objects) and 形而上 (keijijou - "above form" - i.e., the metaphysical realm).

Edit by Vent the North - Sorry Shisui, I had to edit out why you believe Kagami's name fits because it conatains what could be considered a major spoiler.

OK, I will try to listen to Vent the North and write sth else than thanks. Sorry for my bad English and chaotic response in advance ;P.

I've finally caught up with latest releases and what can I say, it's one of the best shounen manga I've ever read. It's a shame that only 9 volumes are left but it's better than artificially dragging the story on.

As for my impressions about latest chapters, well, I did think that the fight in the GP could have last longer. The fights appeared to be too easy and too short IMO and I was wondering if maybe at this point creators had to rush the story and decide on closing it up. It wasn't bad or anything, in a way they were interesting and more realistic (after all fights rarely last long in real life and all characters in GB levelled up because of their constant battles so it may just seem they were easy) but I was used to sth else.
I was also surprised that Paul turned out to be a real powerful guy (one who was worthy of being partner of Ban's father and could steal from Ban). I knew that he wasn't your average Joe but I was thinking more along the lines he was logistics expert or a hacker not a superman. It will be great to see him fight.
Maria Noches had too much troubles IMO, it annoys me a bit that Ban is always the one that saves everyone. That's one of the biggest flaws of the manga, I prefer when it's more balanced. I hope that it won't turn up that Ginji was no match for him (because for now it appears so and I like Ginji more than Ban).
The 100 yen thing as well as saying that this time they were working for themselves was epic and one of the best moments in GB IMO.

P.S.
Thanks Shisui for your explanations. We appreciate it :).

Ohhh! I can't wait to see! Hopefully soon!

And as always, Shusui thanks for translation! Even though half of time, this series is VERY complicated to understand...even if it was translated to english! But that why we love this series anyway!

Did Kazaki do what I think he did to his hair?  I can't wait to find out what that's all about!!

This is such an amazing story!!   :D

Yeah, looks like Kazuki cut his hair...for some reason?  ???

Honestly, I'm not really sure about Shido's last couple of lines. They're probably screwed up. Oh well.

Anyway, no real notes this time. Here's a fun fact if you didn't know this already: Makube X's name is actually pronounced "MacBeth" (Ma-ku-be-su). Never noticed that until now.

Thanks for the comments, btw!

Haha, I just realized that thing about pronouncing Makubex's name, that's very interesting Shisui  ;)

Kazuki's haircut probably has some significance later down the road...he looks different.

I like that trivia about the Trevi Fountain, I actually read up on it after reading the chapter, that's one of the fun things I like about GB :D

Alrite I got to this page too late and Vent has edited Shisul's explanation! :-\

But Makube X is pronounced like Macbeth?? Wow, that IS interesting. Maybe it alludes to a storyline where "none of woman born shall harm Macbeth" (from Shakespeare) or maybe he is just a tragic hero. Hmmmmmmmmm :-\

Well, another week, another fuck up!  :'(

The scene where Akabane meets with the rabbit girl is a little confusing. I screwed up the first line in fact. I thought it was the girl apologizing to Akabane, but it's actually Akabane's line. To make things worse, I confused shikanemasu (won't be able to do) with shikanai (have no choice but to do). The real first line should be:

Akabane: "My apologies, Doctor. It's a shame, but I won't be able to accompany you on ahead."

He refers to the girl as "Doctor," but in the sense of someone with a ph.D., like a professor or a scientist. Not as a medical doctor like himself.

Also, that's Akabane talking in the last two panels if you found it hard to tell. You know when Akabane's talking in Japanese because he always uses formal verb endings (and generally sounds really pretentious). But that's hard to make clear in English.

And a fun fact: When MakubeX says the virtual stairs are a "test of faith" he actually says to think of them as a "fumi-e (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fumie)," which is a carving of a Christian symbol that they forced people to stomp on to prove they weren't Christian. It was something they did in Japan back in the shogun era when Christianity was outlawed.

That is all.

Thanks for the notes, and don't worry about any possible mistakes you might make.  The fact that you are translating at all is just so awesome!  And I appreciate you letting us know when you figure something out that was confusing at the time.   :)

Woah, I was already impressed, and now I am more so -- I love knowing that bit of background info that gives the scene a whole new meaningful dimension!  Thanks!!!

I was confused a bit on the part where the clones attacked them, so while that was happening the actual Makubex and Emishi were right next to them??  What were they doing while GB was being attacked?  ???

Thanks :) It just bugs me when I do the whole trans, send it to somehow_here, then notice the mistake as soon as I read the finished chapter.

It really doesn't make much sense, honestly. But apparently the real Makubex and Emishi appeared from inside their clones and ripped their way out. I dunno what they were doing before that.

That's a good call, btw. I'm not sure what it means myself. It's mainly a shortened version of his name "Makube(ekku)su," but I don't think it's a coincidence either.

I just wanted to say Thank you to everyone that works so hard to get the manga out to us masses.

I'm not one to post...well anything and I'll try to say it more often, but I wanted to at least say this one big Thank you.

When Tokyopop....well they were bakas....screwed us over with getting the manga I despaired ever finding out what happened, but then this group appeared and I was ecstatic to find that we would get to see the end.

You have done us a great courtesy and I give my sincerest thanks for all of your hard work

Wow.... It's been a while since I posted here. Almost an entire volume? Gah.

First of all, I want to say a whole-hearted THANK YOU to Shisui for providing background information in addition to the regular translations. It gives a lot more insight on the series. Keep it up! You are a HERO! Is it too much to ask for translations of the character bios? I'd love to read those...

The sudden abduction of Himiko and Kazuki's harem came out of nowhere and SHELL-SHOCKED ME! FFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!
But it is also a splendid example of how Get Backers goes AGAINST the mainstream in shounen mangas. Usually in tournament arcs like these, it goes on like forever and EACH and EVERY character gets fights that takes several chapters, but here... They just "SUCCESSFUL TROLL, LULZ". Thanks for that. Actual PLOT is so much more entertaining than endless fights.

The little Interlude arc was nice and both a great aftermath of the previous arc ~and~ an amazing set-up for the last arc. Pauls flashbacks finally confirmed what had been foreshadowed at forever - that he was one of the original Get Backers. Together with Der Kaiser, none less! Must... resist... urge... to... draw... Paul... Kaiser... slash... fanart... argh...!

I didn't expect Ujie Kaoru to show up in the manga, since her first appearance was in the anime! However, I have always wondered what she would look like if Ayamine was to draw her instead of Nakajima Atsuko so it was nice having that question answered. Though I still think Nakajima draws her prettier....  ;) I wonder if her personality is the same as in the anime, basically her being a Yandere for Ginji? Well, time will tell.

Nooooo Kazuki, not your pretty, flowing Rapunzel hair! :'(

I loved the Shido/Madoka scene. We've already had it established that they are adorable and share an Eternal Bond, but yet every scene they have together make their chemistry grow stronger and stronger. It's lovely to watch.

But most of all.... I love to watch Ban and Ginji. Honeys, you never cease to amaze me with how you two can make me simultaneously laugh, cry and squee just by being yourselves. The 100-Yen scene seriously made me cry. So.... Unbelieveably.... Beautiful. You really could feel the trust and loyalty they have for each other. Same thing when they entered the Infinity Fortress and remembered how they first met. One look and you understand how far they have gotten since that time. And it's all thanks to one being there for another and vice versa.

So now they are going up, up to the sky. What dangers, adventures and emotional turmoils awaits them at the end of the stairway? I don't have the faintest clue. This manga is too amazing for stupid me to fully comprehend or predict. But I'm sure that as long as our unstoppable Get Backers stick together - for we all know that the "S" in "Get Backers" means neither of them is alone - they can do everything. And they will.

Ah, I thought that GB would have to go through some lackeys first before fighting some of the bigger enemies...well I guess they did on that one panel  :P  Excited nonetheless!

And I'd like to see how Kazuki does against those Ura Fuuchoin...liked the way how he showed the stigma, but too bad I kinda knew about it beforehand  :(

More notes!

I said in the chapter that Fuuchouin means "House of the Bird of Paradise" and Kokuchouin means "House of the Black Swan." Thought I'd expand on that.

The name Fuuchouin is made of 3 characters: 風 (fuu - wind/style) 鳥 (chou - bird) 院 (in - suffix for names meaning temple/house; probably shouldn't be literally translated, but I did it anyway  ;))

A fuuchou (風鳥) is a bird of paradise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird-of-paradise). They're known for their long elaborate plumage. Pretty fitting for Kazuki.

It's also kinda similar to the Japanese word for phoenix: fushichou (不死鳥 - undying bird). Just a thought :)

Fuuga borrows the first character from Fuuchouin. Fuuga (風雅) means grace/refinement.

Kokuchou (黒鳥) means black swan (it literally means black bird, and a regular swan is a hakuchou 白鳥 - white bird). A black swan can be a metaphor for something that isn't supposed to exist but then appears unpredictably. Also, it just sounds cool  8)

Btw, Ban's nickname for Makube X is "hikki," short for "hikikomori." You might have heard about this. It's a kind of social disorder in Japan where people withdraw from society and become shut-ins, because they're overwhelmed by anxiety, social pressure, bullying, etc. I don't think there's an equivalent idea outside Japan, so I just change it to "geek boy" or "poindexter." Heh.

Another double chapter; twice as many impressions and double the amount of pure AWESOMENESS!

Kazuki, your coat is FABULOUS!

Oh, and there is absolutely NOTHING symbolic in the way Maiya is always suckling on something phallic in every panel she appears in, no sir!

GOD that spread of Ginji and Ban laying there like bloody pulps really had my heart beating! …. Until I noticed the “Just one minute!”. ;) Them looking into the camera was super cute and hilarious too! My reaction to those panels was identical to Maiya’s. XD

… Is it very wrong that my first thought when I saw Kazuki’s stigma (well, after the initial “WTF AWESOME” response) was “I wonder what the other characters would have said if he accidentally had dropped his contact during an earlier arc?”. XD

And now Ban and Ginji are fighting Miss Jailbait and Mr Generic Brute… Please kick their asses, GB!

Again, thank you Shisui for your translation notes I really like it that you TRANSLATE even things that don't have a good equivalent in English, by replacing it with something similar. That's really admirable, and it doesn't stop the flow of the story. I can really see it before me if Get Backers got a second anime (HAHAHA IN MY DREAMS), fansubbers would just leave those things intact and have distracting notes on top of the screen.... Brrrr!

The bios at the beginning of each volume all seem pretty much the same. They don't tell you anything you wouldn't know just from reading the manga. If you tell me the specific one you want I can translate it for you though.

Uhm, those aren't the pages I have mind... I was thinking of the pages that look like THESE (http://www.mangafox.com/manga/get_backers/v30/c005/19.html), which features quick doodles of the characters and the artist's notes about them. I know that the bios in the beginning of each volume don't give much, but these pages intrigue me greatly. Because I think it's fun to see what Ayamine himself though of the characters, how it was to draw them and so on. I'm an artist myself, see (though absolutely not a pro on the same level as Ayamine Rando, of course!), so it's interesting for me to see his thoughts behind what he draws. Which is why I'd also like to see translations of the notes and omakes at the end of each volume. Both me and those of my friends who read Get Backers have commented on that those little omakes, with Ayamine and his staff struggling to make it do the dealine, is just spot-on. XD We're comic artists as well, so we know the feeling!

BUT you should ONLY do the translations IF you have enough time for it and think it's worth it~ You don't have to go out of your way just to please ONE rabid little fangirl. ;) I MEAN IT!!

The dialogue between Eimishi and Macubex was full of meaning *_* Finally we know something more about Yohan, I was very curious about him...
And Ginji is tooooo cute XDDDDD

Thank you Shisui for your notes ** I really love them, I can understand better the background of GBs *_*
These in particular were interesting **

Yeah, I hate that too. I'm sure they think that makes the translation more "authentic" in some way. But if you're breaking the flow of the dialogue with obscure Japanese words, that's not a very "authentic" experience at all.

But I still like that info, and I know other people do too, so I just post everything I notice here instead  8)

Yes thank you for the wonderful notes and other revelant info that you tell us board. I left what ever notes I could in background cause I think they add more depth to story! As for the bios was let say unpleasant to edit, but I have a better understanding of where each group belongs to! As for those small writing...I don't think it is necessary since the handwriting looks like chicken scratch...really bad images even if you could translate it...

Haven't made any notes in a while, but here's some trivia from the latest chapter.

The line where Paul says "I just gotta carb up and I'll be good as new (I used to be a runner)."  I just kinda made that up. Sorry ;) The actual line is "If I eat a Glico Caramel, I'll be good as new! (Don't you know they say "One candy, 300 meters"?)

Glico Caramels are a famous Japanese candy (Glico is the company that makes Pocky too, incidentally). The box shows a picture of a runner and says "One candy, 300 meters; Tastes great and gives you strength"

According to Wikipedia, the box says that because the calories in a single candy produce exactly enough energy for a 300 meter run. Funny.

I think that rather then changing the whole translation, you could just leave the direct translation, but write a translators note saying what the translation means.

In this case you could just explain what Glico Caramel is in then note.

And again, thanks for all your hard work shisui. Its cool to know some of the tidbits of information you write here, that aren't stated in the manga.

I love having these extra bits of knowledge shared about what things mean -- this in particular seems like a good substitute which means the same thing, or at least something similar.  Even so, it's nice to be able to learn about what it means literally and why!

I think I'm going to make notes on all the little extra tidbits you've shared here and put them in text documents in my saved chapter folders with the appropriate chapter.  That way I can always remember and keep things together!   ;D

Im fine with having a extra page at the end of the chapter which explains what some of the hard to understand text means. If SH is ok with it then my vote goes towards this idea.

I WAITED FOR YOU, YUKIHIKO-KUN!!!!

DAMN I kept on wishing for him to appear again.... And now he finally HAS! Fuck yeah! But then again, I should have rest assured on this matter - for I mean, of course Aoki-sensei would never waste a character full ot potential like Yukihiko-kun, right?

SQUEEEEEEEEE *fangirlspazz*

Actually, I really, REALLY needed that reappearance of Yukihiko, because I was almost devestated over Paul's "knock on Heaven's door"... and then everyone's favourite Jackal appears. Then we have Emishis's unselfish charge on those bad guys, with that arm flying across the scene... and then it turns out that it wasn't his.

In other words, this chapter was a real roller-coaster. Perhaps I was still shaken up from reading the Final Chapter of Fullmetal Alchemist and therefore was more emotionally vulnerable than usually, but this is Get Backers we're talking about. It's a wild ride, and I'm enjoyoing every minute of it. Keep it up, everyone who is working on scanlating this series! You're all doing great.

Also, commenting on another recent chapter because I never got around to comment on it when it was new - Why yes, friendship is indeed a good thing.  :D

Here I was waiting for Paul-san to drift and eventually die... Goodness knows how sad I was!

Cool chapter, eh?

Btw, all the Miroku siblings have real names, but in standard manga fashion, they're spelled with different kanji that relate to their personalities:

Kirara (奇羅々): Wondrous - Silk (and according to Wikipedia, the name is similar to "kirakira," SFX for "sparkle" apparently)
Ukyou (右狂): Right - Insane
Hikage (緋影): Scarlet - Shadow
Tokisada (時貞): Time - Righteousness (貞はる also means to harp on a single subject, which is what he does :))
Tsubaki (椿): Camellia, a type of tea tree (Not sure why on this one...tsubaki (唾) also means "spit")

Natsuhiko (夏彦) & Yukihiko (雪彦): Natsu means "summer" and Yuki means "snow"; Hiko is a suffix for boy's names. So Natsuhiko and Yukihiko are "Summer" and "Snow," the two opposite sides of the spectrum.

Natsuhiko's sword is called Suigetsu (水月).  If you read Bleach, you probably know this already, but the name comes from the phrase "kyouka-suigetsu" (鏡花水月) which means essentially "flower in the mirror, moon on the water." It's meant to describe the effect of poetry, i.e. beautiful, yet illusory and untouchable.

Also, I screwed up the name of Yukihiko/Shimon's technique earlier. We should maybe put this in a note at the end of a chapter at some point:

Yukihiko's technique is called Uryou Engetsu (有量円月) - "Massive Full Moon"
Natsuhiko's technique is called Muryou Shingetsu (無量新月) - "Ephemeral New Moon"

I called it "Moon Ring" before, but engetsu means "full moon." And uyrou (possessing existence/volume) and muryou (lacking existence/volume) are, I think, Buddhist concepts. So Yukihiko and Natsuhiko's techniques are opposites just like their names.

boy, this chapter is just godly  ;D I say Akabane is the coolest, but in terms of awesome battle poses it appears Miroku 7 are the new champions  :-* Especially Kirara's and Natsuhiko's; those were two of the most beautiful fighting (finishing move ?) stance I've ever seen  ::)

Definitely one awesome chapter! They whooped butt! Remembering the names were a bit confusing, but with the translation of the names it makes a whole lot easier to remember! As for mess on translation, that would been nice but it does not really take anything away from story. It rather just adds a new depth. The Ying and Yang of Yukihiko and Natsuhiko! ;D

Oops. I always stop when the chapter ends and I forget that there's sometimes extra stuff at the end of a volume.

Not that there's anything too important. But here's the little teaser page at the end:

Quote
Voodoo King
Soon, all the Keys will be gathered

And the door shall open

Kanji: A Plot

---

Saizou
That shouldn't be a problem

Shall I bring you the Get Backers?

Kanji: A Traitor

---

Yohan
It's been quite some time

Young Master

Kanji: A Bitter Rival

---

Kanji: Determination

---

Middle Text
Why do these warriors seek "Babylon?"

Bottom
KC Comics(?) Volume 32 Goes on Sale in Mid-October!

Sexy shirtless tattooed Shido is SEXY.

A couple of really intense chapters as of lately. From Masaki revealed to be exactly what I suspected him to be from watching the anime, i.e. a dick, to Kazuki's confrontation with Yohan that once again sealed the fact that Ayamine Rando is a total yaoi fanboy, then Shido's awakening as the chimera... everything's kept me on the edge of my seat, I tell you!

I think I also might have an ~idea~ about the identity of the Voodoo King, but I'll keep that to myself. :P And no, I haven't read any spoilers about it either, so chances are I'm totally wrong about it. Hopefully it'll be revealed soon enough, I'm getting sick of that stupid shadowed silhouette.

Oh, right... sexy shirtless tattooed Shido is VERY SEXY. BRB drawing smexy shirtless tattooed Shido fanartz

And so, the focus is back to our heroic main duo. Of course the first that had to happen was the two of them running into Saizou. God, that guy is starting to get on my nerves - I can't stand smug bastard characters like him, who always like that they are SO fucking superior and unbeatable and what-not... because you know he IS going to get his ass kicked, but it just can't happen soon enough and you'll have him and his annoyingly cunning smirk around for many chapters to come.
Not that he's a badly written character per say - if anything, these sentiments the proof of Aoki Yuya's excellent writing, since he managed to write a dude whose purpose is to be evil. ;D And he has motivation for what he does so... tah!

But it doesn't feel like he's going to lose anytime soon; Saizou's pitched against honey Emishi. Not that Emishi-han is a weak character, but I still get the horrible feeling that no matter how hard a fight Emishi puts up, he'll still be beaten to a bloody pulp. Damn it. I want him to win so badly.
Ginji VS Juubei has a lot of potential, so I'm looking forward to that battle. I also suspect that Makubex VS Sakura's going to get quite emotional, since she acts like an always-present mother to him.
By the way, am I the only one who finds it ridiculously funny and promising that Ban is pitched against a guy he once locked lips with? :-* Please refer to THAT part of the Divine Design arc sometime during the fight, please!

HNNNGGG the next chapters are gonna kick so much ass!! ... Unless the focus shifts again. :-X

Manga Rule #37: Never trust the smart guy with glasses  8)

I don't think Saizou's evil though. He's probably got some crazy complex plan that will justify all the dickheaded stuff he's doing. And yeah, considering he might even be stronger than Kazuki, I don't think Emishi stands a chance.

Speaking of Emishi, if anyone knows what the hell the name of his technique is supposed to mean, please let me know. "Karuma * Ra * So~ma" is the pronunciation in katakana. The first word should be "karma" I think, but I'm not sure about the rest. Some weird Buddhist or Chinese thing maybe? Oh well.

It's interesting, they keep showing closeups of Saizou's face, and he looks sad to me -- even while he's talking mean and nasty.  I wonder if he's going to have a change of heart at some point?  That would be nice!  Though I suppose if it DOES happen, it won't be until after he is mean and nasty to my heroes.

I love Emishi!  He has a way of showing up just in time.  He may not be strong enough to beat Saizou, but I don't think Saizou's strong enough to finish Emishi for good -- he's tough!

Wow, 32/7 was breathtaking!!  I'll comment using spoilers, just in case folks come by here who haven't read the chapter yet.   ;)  Just highlight with your mouse to read my comments!

Quote
I am always so caught up in the tale when Ginji turns into the Lightning Lord -- I hate it when he does it, because it's really just too sad, and you know he's hurting -- which is why he turns in the first place!  But when he changes, it's also some of the best and most awesome story-telling, particularly when Ban has to come and rescue him and change him back.  It's always sweet, always advances their relationship and care for one another, and always brings a tear to my eye!   :D

I was especially appreciative of the spinning coin analogy in this chapter -- what a great way to describe how Ginji's relationship with his two "selves" works!  And what a terrifying thought that if the coin unbalances and falls on the wrong side, there is no getting the other Ginji back.   :'(

I agree about everything you said! Very well put, and pretty much sums up my own thoughts and feelings about the chapter. ;D One addition I have is:

Quote from: SPOILERS FOR 32/7!
I jumped a little in my chair when I read the part about how Asclepius (Ban) sooner or later will have to confront and fight the Lightning God (Ginji). Not that it surprises me as I did a little bit of research about the Asclepius not too long ago, but it still twists Ban and Ginjis relationship around a bit, mostly on Ban's side.
I know they fought when they first met, but since neither of them died, did Ban have this prophesy in mind when he teamed up with Ginji? I know Ban is not pure or innocent, I wouldn't put it past him to let things proceed and then wait for the right opportunty to strike. But if he did that, then I also imagine that he'd be doing it subconciously (keyword!), as he doesn't want to play along with what his Grandma and/or the Babylon Gods have planned, but perhaps the survival instinct told him to. Another thought I have it that he purposely stayed close to Ginji exactly to prove the prophesy is false. Or, they just clicked as persons and he decided he didn't care and said "Fuck you guys, I'm going with the lightning brat". I'm leaning towards this last sentiment.
Errr, I don't know how to put in the right words (damn you, language barrier!), but I hope you understand what I'm trying to get. Damn you, Get Backers, for making me think too hard about matters like these! But, I'm sure everything will be revealed and all questions will be answered before I have read the last chapter, so... tah!

I also want to say "Ban's grandma, thank you for playing matchmaker for your grandson", but that'll probably seem far-fetched unless you're into the whole yaoi and shipping thing.

GAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!

Quote from: SPOILERS FOR 32/8!
This fight is bad for my heart, I swear! I'm sitting on the edge of my chair, my heart beat and barely remember that I need to breath.... ARGH! Stupid fucking amazing Get Backers manga! And if only still-pictures in black and white make me feel this way, imagine what a monster an animated version of this fight would be if it ever was covered by the anime. I can hear the seiyuu screaming on top of their lungs on my head, the earth-shattering sound effects when walls and floor crumble, powerful choir music to further enhance the epicness... Studio Deen, I hate you. And at the same time, love you.

Speaking of monster, anyone else notice how Ban keep refering to himself as monster? Not that it hadn't been at least hinted at at earlier points in the manga, but it gives unexpected depth to his character; that he, arrogant as he is and always calls himself an invincible stud... deep down might actually hate himself. He has been called a demon/devil/monster his whole life (and by his own mother!) - that's GOT to affect his sense of self-worth somehow! All that bragging about how awesome he is and has never suffered defeat? Perhaps he did it to convince himself that he really is invincible, while in reality he resents himself and his Asclepius aspect. He doesn't show it, but I'm positive he might not actually believe he is the indestructable badass he claims he is.
Oh, this somehow turned psyhocanalytical when I didn't mean to. XD But I blame the fact that Get Backers has fantastic characters with superb development that indeed makes you think and use your brain.

EMISHIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is all.

I... almost didn't catch it at the end that Ginji somehow warped back to childform. Ayamine draws them so young-looking right now (bleh) that I could barely tell if he's still adult or not. Ah well, I'll see what becomes of this.

Next chapter can't come out quickly enough...! :o

OH MY FUCKING GOD!!
I've forgotten breathin' for some seconds. Ginji is so overpowered right now.
What the f*** happened with Ban's arm. So this is his true power. I've always guessed that his mother called him a monster because he used the evil eye on her and she had a nightmare (it could have been an accident). But now I think she could have seen his arm. In some flashbacks little Ban appears with a thing(which has inscriptions on it) envolving his right arm.

Dude, I totally get what you mean. You totally said what I think.
I thought I was the only one who considered the psychological side of the characters.

I also think Saizou has some reason to do what he's doing.

It just crossed my mind: if Ban has these power 'cause of his blood, Der Kaiser must have it too. Just imagine.

It's been a while, so let's have some more notes!

The Fuuchouin use a bunch of confusing terms that I probably should have researched a little better before this. I'm going to be more consistent with them from now on.

1. Souke (宗家) - This term can refer to the main branch of a group of families/clans, and it can also refer to the head of the main branch family as an individual. So Kazuki's family is the "souke," and Kazuki's dad is also the "souke."  I'm gonna translate the first sense as "Head Family" and the second as "Clan Head."

The Head Family is generally determined by the lineage of the eldest son. This is why Kazuki, being the eldest son of the Head Family, is considered the successor to the Fuuchouin. If you read Naruto, the Hyuuga have the same sort of heirarchy. Hinata is part of the Heady Family like Kazuki, and Neji is part of a branch family like Saizou.

The issue with Yohan in the volume 31 flashback was that they wanted the Kokuchouin to take over as the new Head Family, and for Yohan to become the new Clan Head. But Kazuki's dad wouldn't allow it (because Yohan's a fuckin' psycho and all).

2. Soushu (宗主) - This is the leader of a family/clan/etc. But I think it's a term that's only used between the leaders of the branches themselves and not by lower members. I'm not 100% on it, really. As I understand it, Kazuki's dad and Saizou's dad would both call each other "Soushu", but Saizou's dad calls Kazuki's dad "Soushu-sama" because Kazuki's dad is from the head family. I just translate it as "Lord" for lack of a better English word.

3. Ura / Omote (裏/表) - Roughly, "ura" means "hidden/underside" and "omote" means "public/top side." The Fuuchouin has its "Ura" side (the Ura-Fuuchouin) which stays hidden and does nasty things in the shadows, and everyone else is on the "Omote" side. I don't translate "Ura" since it pops up so much, but "Omote" I translate into "Mainline" because I think it's clearer that way.

3. Ougi (奥義) - Most of the names for the bowstring arts techniques Kazuki and Saizou use are "chuu-den" - "middle grade." The dragon and firebird techniques they used in this chaper were "ougi-den," which I called "master grade." "Ougi" means like "secret teachings," but in this context it implies like a secret super technique that only a real badass can use.

4. In this chapter Kazuki and Saizou use the honorific "-dono" with each other. I translated it as "master" (*gasp* I know! You'll have to deal 8)).

Shit. That was a lot. Hopefully that's it for a while. Heh.

Hey, couple notes for chapter 1 of volume 34:

1. Ginji's joke line "Don't they say blood is thick as an otter?" I changed it to fit the joke. He really says "Don't they say hemorrhoids hurt worse than athlete's foot?" It's a silly pun. The lines sound similar in Japanese:

Chi wa mizu yori mo koi (Blood is thicker than water)

Ji wa mizu-mushi yori mo itai (Hemorrhoids hurt worse than athlete's foot)

2. When Akabane shows up the background text is the song Kagome Kagome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kagome_Kagome) (I kinda fucked up the translation - got lazy QQ). It's sorta like the Japanese version of ring around the rosy, but there's kid who sits in the middle of the ring with a blindfold on, and he has to guess which kid is standing behind him when the song ends. Also, like ring around the rosy, it sounds kinda creepy out of context like this.

Wooooooo. Peace!

I'm still trying to understand Ban.  During the first Grand Prix battle he used magic, but then it was never shown again.  Will this happen to his arm as well?

Let's try reviving this thread! ;D
I'm so glad it's finally been revealed what's the true purpose of Brain Trust and what their goal is. Of course, I suspect that there is more material on this matter to come, but what's been revealed in the last couple of chapters is nonetheless satisfying and shocking at the same time. The creators of this series have definitely been inspired by The Matrix, at least in the way humans will be controlled and living "fake lives". Actually, it also kind of makes me think of the on-going anime No.6, which also touches upon this subject.

The ogre battle is coming up, but I'm sure the invincible GB will find a loophole of some sorts to make them retrieve the lost time and bonds they came for. :P I have an idea of the identity of the person Masaki whispered to Maria might be, but I'll leave that for the future chapters to take care of.

Speaking of Masaki, the reunion he had with Hevn at the very end of the previous volume was super sweet and a very fitting closure to the book. :-*
