Title: Classic games you played when you were little.
Post by: Vent the North on January 17, 2010, 07:40:58 pm
when I say classic games I mean anything from old atari/snes games you played up to the N64 era and even old computer games.

what are some of the games that you guys loved to play back when games were just starting to become popular?

For me it had to be The Computer game called One Must Fall, It even beat out old Street Fighter and Mortal Combat games for me.

anyways, heres a video showing what One must fall was about.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15bvpznQP5M&feature=related

This game came out in 1994 and was pretty mcuh the top of the line in graphics at the time. It was my favorite game up  until my computer couldn't play it any more.

another one of my favorite games when I was little was a game called MegaRace, It had a combination of shooting cars out of the way, many stages and tracks, and a weird guy who hosts the races. It was another game that I can say was truely the top of the line at the time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDYEBgj5g3o

and my last pick is The original Need for speed game, which was originally made for the Computer, and only had a few cars to chose from. I guess you could say I'm a need for speed veteran, since Ive been playing the need for speed series for so long.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1DgUpt5fbs

As you can see, most of the games I chose were from the 1993-1994 period, I guess thats when I really started playing video games.

what are some games that you guys played when you were younger?

Hmm...the first game I ever played was original bubble bobbles on those large black floopy disk! It was one of few games that I actually enjoyed! I sooo old! It makes me wanna cry! Yeah, moving on! I wasn't interested games until I played my first rpg...Final Fantasy Adventure! It was very easy...not like those previous games like original Mario or Zelda. Those games were so hard that it turned me off from playing those games!  Well, after the my first rpg experience I started to play other rpgs from then on like Chrono Crusade, Phantasy Star,  and Secrete of Mana.  Now I am addicted to playing rpg games...

I remember the good old N64 days, playing on my brothers' console...
Used to love Banjo Kazooie and DK 64  :)
Oh and Legend of Zelda Majora's mask of course...
Good times  :)

Naz: yeah they were the good old days, Legend of zelda was an amazing game, but the thing i liked most about the console, was the way the controllers were layed out  :)

Yup! I feel so old already when you say that! But in my defense I played them when I was under 10! My brothers was avid game collectors and players!  So all those old games I played was theirs! That was cool about having older brothers! You can borrow any games  or game systems you like! Even till this day, I still do! It is pretty awesome! Except the time when they made me and my sister play Street Fighters 2 for 2-3 hours for couple of weeks when game had first came out Super NES >:(...and the awful memory of my brother only using punches to defeat me...it was supposed to handicap! :-[

I played a few games that were on floppy disks in elementary school but that was about it, though the technology in my elementary school was very outdated.

And I like the street fighter games, I used to play them with my brother on the super Nintendo back in the early 90's.

I also did play it in school! I actually learn to type by playing those games...never really got to far in in those typing games, though. I blame it on clumsy fingers.

Oh really!! Street Figher  was an ok game...but playing my brothers was horrible. It was like playing the game on expert mode! And with my clumsy finger, it became close to torture without being inhuman...So how about those other fight games? I had to play them also. It was only few games that allow us play together! I usually get my revenge on them with bomberman and teris attack... Until brothers got mad and made me play fighting games, like Mortal Kombat! Those two games back in the days were consider the leaders of fighting games! That was until Killer Instinct came out! And my brothers finally manage to get sick of fight games...Thank god! :D

The Megaman games, definitely an old-time favourite. Especially the second game from the classic series, that part contains some of the best video game music I've ever heard.

Adventure Island too. I mean, a cap-wearing, prehistorical fatso is awaken by a coconut who falls on his head and he NEEDS to run around on one billion islands and kill dinosaurs and eat berries just to calm himself down. If that's not the greatest excuse for a game play ever I don't know what is...

I actually played that game, too! I did get that far though! I kinda of such at action...basically almost all types of games with exception with rpg and puzzle games. It was funny, but it was bit too hard for me play!

When I was little, they didn't have computers -- well, maybe it wasn't that bad.   :D  They existed but they were not for the general public, and by no means were there games on them.  Nor were there game systems.   :o  But fear not!  I'm not so old that I didn't take advantage of playing what my son had when he was growing up!   ;D  I remember our first PC, where we had some games on those big black floppy discs -- I think there was a Lord of the Rings game I was fond of on one of those.  I also remember Commander Keen, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mega Man X.

I mostly play rpg and puzzle games! I am right now playing Ace Attorney: Miles Edgeworth Investgation and Sands of Destruction. Mostly I play games on DS! I am too use to the 16 bit generations to play 3D games, with some exception like Kingdom Hearts or Xenosaga. I can't  ignore those major rpg games! They are just worth the experience...and their camera angle is not bad enough for me to get motion sickness!  ;) (No first person for me!)

As game that I am playing, the Sands of Destruction is toooo easy! I did not have character die even once. The storyline is much more different than anime. Not radically different...just different! Meanwhile, Ace Attorney: Miles Edgeworth Investgation is  a little more different than it precessors, but it just as fun...I need a FAQ, still. Some of cases are kind of hard to solve...I never beat those processors with it!

Do you have DS...and what games do you play? I can't be the only one still playing games at my age! ;D

No i don't own a DS altho there are 2 in the house. I don't play it very often and if i do it would be puzzles on Professor Lyton games.

I have the Wii, PS3, and also my xbox360, which is the one that gets the most use out of them all.
I like rpg games, but i also like first person shooters, i'm waiting on bad company 2 to be released  8)
Also like the odd racing game here and there, but it would be Forza games  :)

Whoa! That a lot systems! It must cost a fortune! I just "borrow" my brothers' console systems when I am mood play or  have a  game interested...like Final Fantasy XIII that coming out! DROOL! The battle graphics/summons is  too awesome!

Heee hee...I guess that you "borrow" them too! As for Professor Lyton, I play them also! I only manage to finish first game with help of FAQ...some the puzzles I would have never figure out in million years! :o

Ahh it doesn't cost too much to run them, i'm pretty much sorted now just an odd game that comes out. Yeah i've heard alot about this game, i might just have to pick up a copy of it for myself!  ;)

Well it's more i see the DS lying there and just feel like picking it up and playing it!  :P

Oh man i'd hate if i got motion sickness from playing computer games, i dunno how i'd manage! xD

That is definitely good idea! The series is always top line! I love that series...and I played all of them, even the spin-off! Although, I did not care for the most recent ones, FFX, FFXI and FfXII. The quality were good, but I just couldn't get into them for some reason! But the FFXIII Versus looks interesting! That opening looks a lot cooler than FFXIII...using mutiple sword in actually combat mode would definitely rock! Heee hee...I just right now addicted to idea of multiple swords because it was Cloud look awesome using his Tsurgi in FVII Advent Children. To have one sword broken into mutiple swords is just tooooo cool! Ahem, my fangirl just came out!

Quote

So you don't "borrow"? It just "happen" to be there? Just when you need it! ;)

Quote

Yeah, it really eliminates games a lot of games that I can play. (And it makes me want to cry in corner!) I really want to play God of War and the rest of series, but it makes me queasy from the jumping from different area due to changing of camera angle...so no playing for me! Not mention, first person perspective  is even worse for me! Since the view angle really changes abruptly with all jumping and shooting...I just going to have to stick with 16 bit era and 3D games that has over shoulder camera (like Resident Evil) without any jumping or camera that does not move...

Haha sometimes it is and other times i'll see it and then feel like playing it :P

Awh damnit, i know the new Cod has some 3rd person games in multiplayer but thats all :/
And i like Resident evil games too, was majorly into the 4th one, but when the 5th one was out my xbox was dead and i didn't have the money for a new one :/

A fellow comrade! He heee! Its fine! As long as you are having fun! Not get sick for motion! Most computer game does have less action in it. And requires less reaction time. Hmm,  maybe I should start playing it instead of console and hand held console. I got scared of playing PC games when I saw my brother use numerous keys and mouse to play his game...fifteen keys! I forgot what he playing since is was so long ago...but I wonder if there PC games with  less keys? If so what would you recommend? On side note, I heard that Oblivion has such rave reviews with Dragon Age. They look pretty cool...maybe I play them after stealing the game from my brother! It is such a nice thing to have brothers! I can always "borrow" things from them!

I know what you mean!  I borrow some of the games I play from my son -- he's got a pretty good feel for what kind of games I like now, and he'll show them to me when he gets a new one, and suggest I play it.   Though he still complains about one of the games we were both playing at the same time and I beat it before he did!   :D  It might have been Might and Magic VIII ...

Anyway, all this talk of games has me making plans to get back into gaming -- I can't decide whether to pick up Oblivion again, or if I should play Myst IV Revelation.  I'm rather fond of puzzle games like that, too.

somehow_here : I find a good few of the new games quite short, they just don't seem long enough for me at all  :-\  also one of my all time favourite games has to be command and conquer red alert 2.

Well, try them both out! Nothing hurts with playing both! See which one you seem to like more! I usually play two or three games at same time to see which one I like to play/finish first! Although, playing that many games at same time had occasionally cause me to mix up stories! Hee hee! When I think about mixed up stories, I find those stories to be very hilarious!!

Yeah, I think that going a trend these day! They spend so much money in graphic and design that rarely enough time/money to extend the game to right length...But I guess it is better than dragging on right!

Yeah but now with all the new graphics you expect games to have amazing graphics, some games are an alright lenght, and if they have an online multiplayer feature then it's alright, a bit like the new Call of Duty, i took me less than 2 days to finish it then replayed it in the hardest level, passed the next few days, now i just play it multiplayer with highway, greystache, and other friends :D

Well, that true! The graphics are REALLY important in today's gaming world! I guess I just used to playing games that take a month or more to finish without side story! It kinda of rare today, but I guess they come with so much extras, especially with mutiplayer mode! That you don't need a long main story. I guess I just care about the story and its development...I just susprised that you are playing with highway and greystache. It's great that you are hanging out even out of forum. I am more of solo player, though! I like having complete control of characters!

Wow! Did not know that! It is a small world afterall! As for teamwork, it is nice I guess playing together to get to goal. I just a bit of control freak! Hee  hee...my brothers/sisters and friends will unanimously agree to that! As for free for all, I bet you guys especially joy that! Competing against each other to see who better! And nothing makes some one more satisfied than ambushing some one when least expected...especially on back!

Super Mario Bros. (NES) and Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES). I also played a TMNT game for the NES.
I had a wario game for the first GameBoy, had a lot of fun playing that.

I'm sure that I played more classic games, but I don't remember them anymore :(

No one here played Commander Keen?
It was a great platform game and one a weird note its from the makers of Doom and wolfenstein.
Doom 2 even had a secret level where you could see Keen his body.

Commander Keen!!  Yes, indeed, an excellent game!  That was the very first game we got when we got our first computer.  The whole family learned to play it and no work got done, as a result.   ;D

If this is an attempt to get me to reveal my age, it has succeeded  :P

One of my earliest game was in those "Game & Watch"  gadgets that only have one game in it, like Donkey Kong, Hello Kitty and what not.

On the PC, I played Pacman, which came in one of those 5.5 inch floppy discs that actually flopped. The colorful little ghosts were among the most "terrifying" enemies I've met in my entire gaming life. There's also Digger, Tetris and Alley Cat (the bulldogs were pretty badass, despite their lack of pixels). LodeRunner was one of my favourites too.

On the consoles, there was Mario Bros, Ice Climber, Contra, Kungfu, Bomberman, Street Fighter - there's too many but these are what I can name off the top of my head.

I don't even remember the first game I ever played... the first that comes to mind is "Pacman", then "Tetris" and "Ghost 'n goblins" (all of them arcade games back in the '85 or so). I played some vic20 games, then I got a C=64 (the great classics like "Turrican" and "The Last Ninja" came years later), then switched to a pc with a 386 at 16mHz and played "Wing Commander" and "King's Quest V" with 3½ floppy. Years passed, I bought a Dreamcast (with "Shenmue") and a PS2 that I still use from time to time.

Oh my god, One Must Fall. If it weren't for your youtube link showing that picture, i would never have remembered what game that could have been. Me, my friends and my little brother used to play that so much. It was quite entertaining. As for my childhood, after looking briefly through this thread. It's about the same as everyone else. Early Nintendo era as well as Atari and some Commodore 64.

My uncle had some kind of Mario Brothers on his Commodore 64 which was really hard compared to the mostly easy NES, alike to that fan made Super Mario World going around right now.
Also the Atari we had was the programming kind, the one where you had to input the game program before being able to play it. Our favorite was some basic Kart racing game.

I started with a cassete ZX Spectrum and I also had another one that had games on floppies. I mostly played Rampage, Paperboy and Bumpy on them. Later, we got an Amiga 500 where I played Prince of Persia, Monkey Island, Speedball 2, Dune, Super Off-Road, Chaos Engine, Cannon Fodder, and a lot of other games. I was 7/8 when I got my first PC, a 486 DX2 66MHz with a 400MB HDD. That's when I discovered that I had problems of motion sickness with games while playing Doom and Wolfenstein 3D, which I managed to finish since I didn't understand what I was feeling and I continued playing them, lol. With today's 3D games, I don't have problems, but there are still games like Half-Life 2 that can make me feel sick, while I can play Modern Warfare 2 for 8 hours straight without feeling anything like that. It's weird, since by the posts of some of the older users, there are people sensible to many more 3D games.

I have motion-sickness trouble with some games, too -- mostly when I am watching others play them, but a few I actually struggle with myself when I am playing them.   :-[

Wow i though i was the only one with motion sickness from games, whenever i play half life or portal (for a long time) i get really dizzy and if i don't stop i start feeling sick. I think it has something to do with the field of vision. Same thing if I can't advance for more than an hour or so in a game or with old 3D googles.
Anyway classic games i would say macross for the family (the jap. version of the nes), i still remember it, the little SD min may hitting the gong and all. Also the first mario game, and circus (all for the family). That was when i was really small like 6 or 7 years i guess.

Thanks to the awesome powers of emulation, I've been playing Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask which I loved when I was younger. Keyboard controls are not as easy to manuever with as a N64 controller was, though...

Sonic and some Misc. Disney game on our Sega system was what preoccupied a lot of my time as a kid, though.

"Classic" for me doesn't go further back than the N64, but my brother and I used to play Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers all the time (Toad and Kirby for me, every time). Oh, oh, and STAR WARS RACER! IT'S A NEW LAP RECORD!

...my dad used to play Blood on the PC. I never understood the appeal, but my five-year-old brother was delighted with it. Though I found a copy of Doom a few years back and had a great time (mostly because I found the constant dying hilarious. I sucked at Doom.) Ah, good times.
