Hey yeah i thought that this thread was really good on the last forum, so thanks for reposting it on this forum too. I will try to look at as many of these as i can because i haven't read half as many as everyone else here :-\

Just take your time on reading them! Most people whom read as much as I have, probable have started earlier than you...and I just lack a personal life, so I plenty of time in my hand. The list I wrote mostly include shounen, so you should find some of them interesting! Hopefully, other people will include their list of recommend manga so you have more variety to choose from!

Aaaah, good ol’ Great Teacher Onizuka. Holds the #2 spot in my top 3 most beloved mangas.

Yes, yes and YES. I love the Mai-franchise to bits, easily among my top 10 animes (especially Mai-HiME). And thank God it’s the anime versions you recommend, for that’s where the pure gold’s at. The manga adaptions are just… just… *urk* Some hysterical harem ecchi crap. IMO, they don’t live up to the sky-high levels of the animes, no, not in any sense whatsoever.

This one, I SO want to read more of it. It’s AYAMINE RANDO FFS. But it doesn’t seem like any scanlation groups are interested in working with everything that comes after chapter 3. Shame.  :'(

So, I have read through everybody’s lists and various recommended… and I am shocked to find out that not even the smallest words has been said about Blade of the Immortal.

Blade of the Immortal is a very special manga for me. I fell in love with it at first sight when I was 13 (Lovux is now 20), and it still holds a dear, deep place in my soul. Just like Ginga Nagareboshi Gin will always be my favourite anime, Blade of the Immortal will always be my favourite manga. Never mind the fact that two certain sexy retrieval agents refuse to leave my brain at the moment

Oh Manji, honey, how I have been crushing you for six years!

GTO is one of my favorite mangas if not my favorite manga. Its story is very unique and its completely hilarious. I laughed on almost every page when I read GTO.


I was a big fan of mai hime/otome  way back when. the fights in the the otome and hime anime's were just epic.


So do I, I actually would like to start a holy talker porject if we get some more translators.

I actually watch GTO first as drama...then anime and finally manga! It feels akward to make that transition. It is usually reverse. Anyway, it was great series! I it was one of first teacher-class series I have ever read/watch. My favorite of all time. (The drama is one prefer!)My second favorite is Gokusen. I discover same way as GTO.  The drama was easier to find than manga when I first discover these wonderful series!

As for Mai series, I also agree that manga doesn't hold a candle to anime. The series was seriously dulited by ecchi and harem concept! I watch the TV series first and decide to read the manga. Boy was I disappointed. Nothing but perverted scenes left and right!

Anyway, I just wanted to say that if you wanted to start a project on Holy Talker I could edit the chapters. I thought that Holy Talker was very interesting! (I actually forgot until you guys mentioned it!) I would love to see more of it, so I would be happy to help out! Of course, my main piorty is to finish the GB first! I just edit a bit slower, but it shouldn't matter that much since we have excellent cleaner.  But if we do any of Holy Talk or any other Ayamine Rando works, I think we should create a new page call the release for feature projects that not related to GB! But First we need more translator! Maybe we should create a help page in release for more translator or something...

Thats a weird order to watch/read GTO in lol. I actually never watched the anime since I heard that it didn't really stick close to the manga, and alot of parts were cut from the manga when the anime was made.


I acree with you 100%. The only thing I really liked about the mai-hime manga was dark mai, Other then that it wasn't really that great.

We actually already have a recruiting staff page on the main website, but so far, no translators have applied, just cleaners and editors, and even then, most of them bail out when I ask them to clean a page of manga for me as a example of their work.

Ill try and see what I can do about getting more translators, Maybe Ill look on MH, and see if anyone on there is interested.

Something I really like about Mai-HiME and Mai Otome is that how they have all the common themes and settings for a shounen series, but with reversed gender roles. Like, the girls have nuclear powers and can fly in space while the few guys who are around are totally powerless and don't have a clue what's going on and IF one of them do get to partake in the story, it's as a (shallow) love interest. Usually it's the other way around.  ;)

A Holy Talker project sounds awesome! But even if any translators were to be recruited (and don't bail out), where to find the raws to scanlate? I have searched for this series, and as if it wasn't enough that only three chapters have been scanlated, it doesn't seem like raw chapters can be found either. Some Chinese scanlations (that don't even go beyond chapter 7!) are the closest I've stumbled upon. Doesn't seem like there is much love out there for Holy Talker.  :-\

Hmm, really! Wow! Never realize that Holy Talker is that under appreciated!  >:( I really can't find the raws anywhere! I guess it either we pick a new series to release or try to buy raws. That was disappointing! :-X But foremost, we still need to get translators to start a new series!

...if we do manage to get translator and choose another series, a good site for raws is http://crazymanga.be/ (http://crazymanga.be/). They only post up manga/mangwha/manhua that not been licensed in other countries! It is an excellent to download manga that are scanned or raw! If you have time, please check them out!

I know, I just realised that there weren't really any raws for HT to download, I send a request in on mangahelpers, so maybe someone on there will know where to get the raws.


Thanks, That site is really helpfull. What do you guys think about the series called Xblade? I like that series and if no-one else is going to regularly scan it I would like to do that as a project. I think someone just picked the series up again, but if they don't continue, then we could probably work on that. If they do continue to scan it I just find another manga that I would like to see scanned.

Xblade is pretty interesting! It was one series I liked, but I don't remember much about it...original scan group had release each chapter from two to five months, so I forgotten most of details. Let wait and see if new scan group else continues it! If not, I don't see a problem with continuing the series. In mean, I think we should just take a look at other series! There are pretty many other raws from site, but many of them are picked up by other scans group...hmm, I think it would be best just see which project we like to do the most before actually asking other groups if we do the same project!

I have no intention to do a manga which another group is doing. I just said xblade since every group that picks it up eventually drops it. Ill look around and see what other manga's would be good to translate. But before anything we need more translators.

No I don't mean like that! I meant that some raws that scan by other groups are in similar situation as X Blade! A few of chapters are translated, but they take forever to release or they release only a few chapters! As for X blade, I would really like to help in editing that project...but right now, since everyone is busy I think it good idea to wait to see the response is!

Sorry for the double post! But I thought it was necessary! I recently discovered that the group scanning X blade, TDS and AAS,  had said that going to scan the series...so we need to choose a new series! Once everyone else come back, of course!

Onside note, I love those groups! They always scans series that are less known, but just as good! If you have time, please check them out!

Thanks for this list!  There are some here that I am currently reading -- or should I say, I have them bookmarked and I'm making my way through them as I have time.   ;)  In particular, I'm trying to read through Rave Master and Eyeshield.

I am especially glad to see Major on this list -- it's nice to know someone else appreciates that one!  I adore the Major anime, and follow the manga religiously because I can't get enough of the story, even though these days I have to rely on raw scans to follow current Major events.   I am really sad that no one has been translating it for the longest time -- in fact, the anime has passed into untranslated manga territory by now, so I have to rely on there being anime episodes in order to fully understand what's happening.  In any case, I'm a big fan of the Major manga, and find myself waiting eagerly for raw scans each week, just to look at the pictures and guess at the story!

I discover Major the same way! I loved the characters and overall storyline. There was a group translating Major, but I don't know what happen to them.  I was hoping that they would catch up to raws...but they disapear! I don't want to spoil the surprise by reading the raw, so I am waiting for a new season of Major. Wikipedia said "A sixth season... will premiere on April 3rd, 2010. " Its already February, so we just wait a bit longer! And I definite know that either the MJN or I Eat Anime group will sub them! I can wait for next season! In meantime, just reading Rave Master and Eyeshield 21 to keep yourself busy until then! Both are good choices by the way!

I actually have Major Season 6's opening day marked on my calendar!  I'm literally counting the days.  I had the thought of rewatching the whole series bit by bit until April comes, but Major is one of those shows that once I start watching, I can't stop!  I'll have to try to do better at pacing myself so that I can spread it out.  In the meantime, yes -- Rave Master and Eyeshield 21 for my reading pleasure.  I'm really enjoying them!

Maybe, I should mark it down on my calendar! But I think I might accidentally kill myself with anticipation!  ::) The next arch is definitely going to be awesome! Goro is finally going to major...and other Japanese players are definitely going to follow! Whoa, I got to calm myself down! I might just jump on walls!  I just love the series!

Whew! Anyway, if you need to extend your list a little, cause Rave Master and Eyeshield 21 can be addicting and make the chapters go at speed of light! I would recommend reading  Fight no Akatsuki (basketball) and Whistle (soccer). Both of series are complete, but Whistle has one more chapter to be translated to english...it is currently licensed by VIZ, so last chapters will take awhile to come out to US!

You may notice (if you bothered to check) that statistically supprising amount (about half) have something to do with my own group. What can I say. I do series which I like.

Most of those series are just plain good. Others will need to be explained.
-Tokyo Mew Mew. My first experience of a manga with catgirl. It was love at the first sight.
-Naruto - Footsteps. Made me realize that shonen ai is not just for girls. Opened a new world for me.
-Eiken. No explanation needed.
-(by Evangeline) and (by Midhras). Some series are standard, until they meet a pro cleaner. I never really realized it until I read HQ of Ai Yori Aoshi and Princess Tutu. Those series changed from avarage to awesome overnight. I also recommend reading  Vampire Hunter D v2 by Evangeline. While I didn't care about it's story, it has the most breathtaking artwork I have seen.

I guess in a way it does reveal a lot of what people are!  ;D I pretty much agree with your list with exception of hentai/ecchi list! I am girl...there is only so much fan service I can take before I give up on series...For example, I love Airgear, but do they need to show show nude girl almost in ever chapter!


Yes...I totally agree with you in that aspect! The people that upload the series should at least makes sure to obey the rules from scan group. Someone had load some of our scans from mangafox...so it had those annoying border on bottom! I did not mind them uploading the series to mangatrader. I just hated the file they use, so I had to upload the real chapters. (Yes, it is possible! As long as the reason is provide for same upload in detail box.) But the reason I like mangatraders so much is the fact that it has more complete collection than any site that I have been to. Not mention, it provides variety of information about the series, provide links in volumes, and the downloading speed is pretty fast. If you are still annoyed by those files, I guess I could upload the updated volumes into mangatrader for you. Just give me the list of files and download links (in case I might not have those series)...

I guess I should have explained Eiken so you wouldn't think me as total perv. Nah, I suck at lying anyway.
One day just walked to shop and said: "give me your most retarded ecchi" and walked out with Eiken 12-pack (Not kidding).  And after reading it,,, I felt that world had to know.
Well it ain't the best of manga. Nor is it best of ecchi either. But it's so over the top as harem and fanservise that I actually ended hating the main boy character, and started to feel bad for the girls. And I read releases from LWB regularly. I ain't shocked from little.
Don't get me wrong. I did it all for ecchi. But this manga should get somekind of award.

Yes, I totally agree you by that aspect! I guess you have to trade one for another...quantity over quality. What can you do? It better for series to be known with bad quality than not known at all...I would have never discover half of series if I never joined Mangatraders.


Yup! A girl! Ha ha! With taste for shounen manga! I know there are plenty of more perverted stuff out there! After all, there is great difference between hentai verus ecchi stuff! Hentai has actually sex and ecchi only alludes to action of sex with plenty of nude/undergarment images. I just get annoyed with heavy fanservice. I am girl afterall! I will actually try to read those ecchi manga to see if it is any good! In fact, I actually tried to read Eiken from your site. It was ok, but nothing really stood out with exception of heavy panty shots and ecchi scene. Most of the time, the ecchi mangas loses the plotline or same plotine is repeated too many times. I actually don't mind harem/reverse harem as long as the author/authoress doesn't lose the plotline...like Tenchi Muyo and El Hazard. As for getting Eiken, wow! That got to be one of most bravest/embarrassing thing you ever done! Kudos to you!

Lol Eiken....That is one of the  most perverted manga's out there. I mean they have 6th graders with boobs the size of watermelons.

I haven't watched it, but ive seen summary's and pictures.

Ha haa ha! Six graders with size of water melon! I understand kids develop earlier, but those chests are little big! Talk about fan service! ;) Anyway, the story is not that bad...it just regular harem story with extra ecchi-ness.

Every Urasawa's manga (especially Monster and 20th Century Boys but also Pluto, Happy! and others), Trigun (and Trigun Maximum), Gintama (my favourite shounen manga), Hunter X Hunter, GTO, Kenji, Vinland Saga, Fullmetal Alchemist, Black Lagoon, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and many others. I recommend to go to http://myanimelist.net/topmanga.php and see the top list (it's quite accurate actually and most mangas that are in top 20 should be definitely read).

I reccomend angel densetsu.
At the beginning the drawining is horrible, but it's a very funny manga, and not only this.

-Air Gear (It's a crazy-awsome-hardcore-shonen-with-a-twist-of-ecchi about a rag-tag team of delinquents and their flying rollerskates. HELLZ YEAH!!)

-Ouran High School Host Club (Satisfies the girly side of me; a comical shojo with crazy-exaggerated characters and a reverse-harem to boot :P)

-Naruto (Despite all it's hype, I really do like the story.)

-Battle Royale (Tread lightly- this one deals with heavy stuff. If you can handle the over-the-top, graphic (italicized for a reason) violence and sexuality, it's a very good story of psychological warfare and character introspection, about the lives of a 9th grade class that's forced to do a battle-to-the-death in a dystopic futuristic Japan. My absolute favourite manga/novel.)

-Loveless (A shonen-ai with many elements of fantasy. As the story went on, I found that the romance theme started to lessen, but it's very interesting overall.)

-Trigun/Trigun Maximum (I'm too tapped out to give a summary, but it's pretty awesome.)

Seconded. This is where I found a character who is actually more badass than Ban and Akabane combined.

Kiriyama or Shinji? One was an emotionless badass that sprayed people like they were garden weeds, and the other was a cocky badass who could hack government computers and build bombs. Or Kawada, the hardened "veteran"? Mitsuko? Damn, there were a LOT of badasses in that manga XD

definitely fullmetal alchemist, the storyline is so packed full of action and well written
and for something lighter but still kinda serious - skip beat!

Agree on FMA, although I didn't like the anime version of that the manga version is awesome. Fight scenes are great.

I liked the Gundam Astray mangas... but the manga that I most recommend would be Angel Sanctuary. I cannot even begin to describe how incredible the story is. Very well drawn too. Detroit Metal City is also really good and I promise it will have you in fits of laughter.

The two I followed most closely were FMA and Get Backers, Now that FMA is over I need something to fill the empty space in my life. Ive tried reading Naruto and Bleach but Im not a huge fan. Are there any other mangas with similar stories/characters/conspiracies etc. such as in FMA and GB. Not everything has to be the same obviously, just manga that hold my interest as well as these two.

You must read One Piece. Here's why:
You get suck into its world. When you read you can feel that you are in the world of One Piece. Just like our real world where events are happening every single second in all places, in the world of One Piece too each crew, marines are doing their own thing in different parts of One Piece. You get snippets of what is happening with each crew, character and world event. It's not entirely focused on the main characters. It is a story about the world of One Piece, not Luffy.

I would stay away from Bleach. Why? People are gonna flame me but it basically has no creative storyline. It is just ichigo strong, meet stronger enemy, ichigo gets stronger or new power, defeat enemy, stronger enemy comes, ichigo gets stronger/new power, defeat enemy....

Marchen Awakens Romance is also a good one by the Flame of Recca author. I notice he likes using item mediums in his manga. Madogu in FoR, ARMs in MAR, and now in Mixim7 they use items to channel their abilities. Good concept, but I think the guy's hooked. Kami Kaze is a pretty short, but bloody manga to enjoy. Black Cat was interesting with several good fights. Of course there's the obvious Takuma Fudou reference in there. Samurai Deeper Kyo is probably my number 2 favorite besides GB. There's a list....

The only other manga I am currently reading other than GB is Pandora Hearts, which is very mysterious and has a great cast of characters, although their not similar in style, I should say. To be fair, I've never found a manga quite like GB

try reading berserk , granted its only for a more bloodthirsty audience >.> ....
its still one of the greatest manga's i read daily

I also think Cromatie is a really good manga. And I mean REALLY GOOD.

I recommend Gintama, go watch that anime or read its manga ( I think anime is superior tough, way too superior :) )

Two of my favourite mangas. I can also recommend Soul Eater, Fairy Tail and Psyren.

If you like GB's genre, you'll most likely like Wild Adapter too, though it has a more serious atmosphere than GB. It's from the author of Saiyuki, Kazuya Minekura. If you want something crazier and funnier, go for Gintama. It's a really good series lol.

Of course there's the big three... there's also Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Fairy Tail (which I really rec!), D.Gray-Man, Prince of Tennis, Tenjou Tenge (THIS you must at least try).

There are also some mangas lately that are borderline between shoujo and shonen, like Pandora Hearts and 07-Ghost. Both are really great and has a very intricate plot. I highly recommend them both.

The series focus' more on real human ability and less of complete fantasy powers (though there still is a lot of crap that would be physically impossible). It's got a good balance of comedy, slight romance and action.

you should give death note a try.
Or if you re more into action try samurai deeper kyo (it doesent have a deep story, but it certainly is entertaing)

for these who like psychological: lolipop or a bullet -- its not very famous, but its really good. The characters are very real in every way and, while the story is very sad, its not to far fetched

well, getbackers aside,

Flame of Recca was pretty good. downright shounen, alongside black cat, fairy tale, one piece, etc

Franken Fran is an interesting read. deals with some technology vs morality issues

Tegami Bachi is beautiful. it's kinda hard to explain, but it can get very delicate

lastly, GTO. it's really difficult to explain this, but it's just awesome. So awesome, the author's still milking it after it ends at volume 25.

I totally love switch manga and anime. I fell in love with it when i watch the 2 ova, it was really intriguing! although the arts of the manga make it hard for me to differentiate the characters, the plot is awesome!! I especially love the chapters involving "switch", and I also love the hal and etou relationship!! I just wish they made a full anime of the manga...

tegami bachi is also nice, the plot thickens with each chapter!! the more it reveals, more question arise. its one of those story that get more complicated with each revelations. keeps the reader on their feet, makes you impatience to wait for the next chapters to be translated. hehe.

nurarihyon is good too! at first am not too sure about this, but after reading few chapter (by few I mean 30-40 chapters), the story got to me.

I also love kaibutsu oujo (princess resurrection), I keep wondering what will happen next!! the plot is so random (in a good kind of way), you'll never be able to predict what happen next. also, I love all the main character in this manga. all the leading females have a strong, witty personality to themselves (I dislike females that cries a lot, always need rescuing or blame others when things go wrong).

another manga that I recommended is zombie loan. the plot is good and I love the two leading males characters, shito and chika! the anime is good but it seems incomplete to me. there should be more episode!!

Takemitsu Zamurai: The Bamboo Samurai

Fairy Tail.  And though I haven't read it, but seems promising, Beelzebub.  I haven't read it but the summary seems interesting and a lot of people have said it was quite good.   Also, Noblesse. 

From the many great mentions by previous posters. I will recommend Fairy Tail and Beelzebub and The Breaker the most. Although all the ones mentioned should be read.

I don't remember seeing these mentioned so I will: Ao no Exorcist, Code Breaker (Author of Samurai Deeper Kyo), Arata Kangatari (a better Inu Yasha), Arago, a new one only 3 ch. translated called Blood Lad, Holyland (the most realistic fighting manga I have ever found), Hanzasky, and one complete one called Veritas.

How about Genshiken, Nodame Cantabile and Flame of Recca?

Fruits Basket is pretty well written too, but I can't say much for the art's consistency.

For me frutis basket is a great manga, but i reccomend especially Three :

Well Full Metal Alchemist is widely considered to have a slightly different style then other shounen style, but you should try fairy tail.  I love it, and its very popular recently, but hitman reborn is also god.  And its pretty hard not to cheer Kenichi on in History's strongest disciple Kenichi (the second version, not the one thats forty chapters, but the ongoing one).  He is a lovable guy.

I love GTO! Shonan Junai Gumi was dropped by Tokyopop with a lot of volumes to go (11) untranslated. But finally they are being released, or started to be released in February next year! Two books per volume. The same company is also begining to translate and release Shonan 14 Days in January next year.

hmm The breaker is good if you like kenichi, i thought it was like a more serious + better version. code breaker, pandora hearts, 07 ghost are other mangas which i quite liked

mmmm i really love nana, thought it's an incompleta manga and it's no too sure that the mangaka will actually finish it...
another great series are: dragon ball (it marked my childhoold), dragon quest, inuyasha, momo, detective conan, fruits basket, fushigi yugi, yu yu hakusho (though i prefer the anime), full metal alchemist (incredible serie)... and of course, the well known naruto, one piece and bleach (specially the last two).
